Admin/Biographical History Crandall's obituary appeared in The Daily Nonpariel, Council Bulffs, Iowa, November 13, 1907, p. 5:

E.B. Crandall, 403 South First Street, aged 73 years, died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday morning of old age. He had been in failing health for about three years, and had retired from his occupation as a fruit grower. Besides his wife he leaves two step-daughters, Mrs. John Van Fossen, 410 South First Street and Mrs. W.H. Bean, 288 Harmony Street. Mr. Crandall had been a resident of Council Bluffs about forty years, having come here by ox team. The funeral will be held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at the residence, the services being conducted by Rev. J.M. Williams. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery.
Scope & Content This collection consists of the handwritten diary (and typescript copy) kept by Eliphalet Crandall dating from 1859, Feb. 5 - Aug. 19. The first part of the diary describes his daily life in Iowa (no town is mentioned). On March 31, 1859, Crandall begins an overland journey to California. He writes about his stops along the way, including various places throughout Nebraska Territory. Various names of people and references to place names are mentioned.
