Born December 18, 1848 in Herkimer County, New York, Willard Broat was the son of Henry and Mary (Doxtader) Broat. The Broat family farmed in Herkimer County and also worked at the Manheim Turnpike Association cheese factory. In 1867 Willard Broat married Amelia Wiley and the couple would eventually have seven children. In 1879 Willard and Amelia migrated west, eventually homesteading in Buffalo County, Nebraska. Broat farmed in Buffalo County until the 1890s. The family moved to Missouri briefly before settling in Douglas County, Kansas.
Willard Broad died at Lawrence, Kansas, on January 10, 1932. He is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Lawrence, Kansas.

The collection consists of a transcription copy of three years of Willard Broat's daily diaries for 1868, 1869 and 1879. In 1867 and 1868 he writes of life in Herkimer County, New York. In 1879 he moved to Buffalo County, Nebraska. Here he writes of establishing his homestead, drilling a well, etc.
This was edited in 1983 by Adell Carr Smith. Smith added an appendix which includes family history and pictures for Broat and his wife, Amelia (Wiley) Broat. Some liniment recipes are also found in the appendix. There are two indexes include: a name index and a place/subject index.
