Admin/Biographical History The Kansas-Nebraksa Bill marked the beginning of the Democratic Party in the Nebraska Territory and State. From 1854 until about 1860, politics in Nebraska were factional and chaotic. Issues were settled not along partisan lines, but rather along sectional boundaries. Location of the State Capital sparked a contest between counies north and south of the Platte River. In 1860 a movement calling for the organization of parties began, and from that time on, partisanship played a key role in Nebraska public affairs. Between 1860 and 1868, although the Democrats did not win office, the two-party system flourished. From 1868 until the appearance of William Jennings Bryan in the 1890s, Nebraska most clearly resembled a one-party state in which the Republicans were never seriously challenged. The agrarian discontent of the 1890s signaled a temporary end to party leader J. Sterling Morton's laissez-faire govermental philosophy and the beginning of Bryanism, a heterogeneous set of doctrines which demanded aggressive governmental action on behalf of the people. Under the influence of William Jennings Bryan and Charles W. Bryan, the Nebraska went Democratic during the Populist era, World War I, and the depression of the 1930s. After 1935, Democratic influence waned, but rejuvenated in the 1950s.
