Notes US Vice President, US Congressman. As a young man, he contributed articles on Indiana politics to the New York Tribune. He wrote editorials in support of first the Whig party and later Republican views. He was a member of the state constitutional convention in 1850 and was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving (1855-69). Having been selected a candidate to be on the ticket headed by General Ulysses S. Grant for President, he was elected as a Republican the 17th US Vice President and served (1869-73).

The collection consists of a letter, dated March 23, 1870, from Schuyler Colfax, U.S. Vice President under U.S. Grant. The letter is written to W.B. Lamphere and Jessie M. Sutherland, committee members of the Schuyler, Nebraska, Library and Literary Association. In the letter, Colfax accepts an offer of honorary membership in the society. He also indicates what an honor it was to have a county and a city named for him by the Nebraska Legislature. Also included is the envelope in which the letter was sent.
