The collection consists of one letter written by Blackhawk, a Sioux Indian, to Ida James, daughter of William H. James, former Nebraska governor (1871-1873). The letter dates from March 7, 1875, while Blackhawk was serving a prison sentence. In the letter he states that he wished William James was still the governor because he felt his prison sentence would be commuted if that were the case.
