The collection primarily consists of letters relating to the Smith, Copeland and Elwood families, when they lived in Dublin, Indiana, Worthington, Indiana, and Morgan Valley, Iowa. The correspondents write of their daily lives and family news. The letters date between 1838 and 1883. The Elwood family branch eventually settled in Nebraska.
