Notes Victor Vifquain came to Saline County, Nebraska around 1858 from his native Belguim. During the Civil War, he served with the 53rd New York infantry. He was then commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant Adjutant of the 97th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was twice promoted on the field, eventually to brigadier genearl. He received the Congressional Medal of Honor for capturing a rebel flag at Ft. Blakely, Alabama. He served as a diplomat to Panama. He was Adjutant General of Nebraska and commander of the 3rd Nebraska Volunteer Regiment during the Spanish American War.

Spanish-American War Roster for the Third Nebraska Infantry, Company F. The roster is published by C.T. Fuller of Buffalo, New York. At the Top of the roster, it says "SOLDIER'S MEMORIAL". There is an image of a Lady Liberty type figure with a U.S. Flag and laurel wreath. There is a large eagle and shields below. She is surrounded by soldiers. A wounded sailor is receiving a laurel wreath. There are various scenes illustrated around the edges of the roster such as encampments, battleships, crossed swords, canons, soldiers being welcomed home, etc. Below the names on the roster is a battle scene. The artwork is by F.A. Neubauer of Cincinnati, Ohio. The central part of the print contains a list

The blade is undecorated steel. On one side "a Bruscelleo" is engraved. On the other "Lassen Cie" is engraved. One side of the guard is decorated with an image of a lion with front paws up on shield with a snake in the shape of the letter "S". Below are two branches. The pommel has a floral decoration. The hilt is brass and the grip is wrapped with a brown highly polished material (possibly wood). In between the strips are twisted pieces of black wire.

Undecorated scabbard with two carrying rings. The end has a drag that is almost horse-shoe shapped and appears to be made of another type of metal. A piece of white cotton string was tied to the two carrying rings at the time of donation.

The silver blade is decorated with a scrolling vine motif. "U.S." is etched in one side. Under the guard it says "Presented to: General Victor Vifquain By the Irish Nationalists of Nebraska July 15th, 1898." The hand guard is gold tone as is the knuckle bow and pommel. The hand guard has an eagle motif on one side, on the other side is a shield, branches, arrows, swords. The knuckle bow is heavily decorated and has a small animal head in the middle. The grips are black with wrapped gold metal strips with beaded motif.

Black top hat; fur with a black wool band. The edges of the brim are made of taffeta. There is a yellow leather band inside and a cream silk lining. Stamped inside it says "Made in London expressly for the sport 17 Boulr Montmartrg 17 Paris"

The case is covered with a tan canvas-type material. It is oval in shape with sides that slant outward. The lid comes completely detached. It has a handle and two buckles. The two exterior straps on the case has broken off and are missing. There are two interior straps to keep the hat in place. The case is lined with a blue and white striped fabric. The lid has the remnants of a paper label. It says "American" "St Lazare N. New York" "U & V" There are metal strips reinforcing the strength of the case.

Three lines of deep grooving carved on upper 5/6 of shaft. Top of shaft has large band of red cresting and 2 shorter bands of blue cresting. End of arrow is fletched with brown and black striped feathers, with one dark pinkish red feather wrapped into the sinew. Feathers are attached to the shaft with glue and sinew at both top and bottom.

Horse tail. Hair is light colored and has been dyed with bright red pigment. This is a portion of a horse tail and has a piece of hide still attached to the hair. The base of the tail has a thin piece of gray wire wrapped around it. Hair is wavy.
