This collection relates to Darius H. Chapman's trip to the Kansas gold fields. Included are the articles of agreement, in which S.C. Fuller, Guilford, Illinois, stakes Darius H. Chapman and Henry H. White on their trip to the Kansas gold fields. It is dated March 12, 1859. A typescript diary kept by Chapman, March 15 to June 12, 1859 records experiences of his roundtrip journey from Rockford, Illinois, to Plattsmouth, Nebraska Territory, and back to Illinois. His original intention was to go to Pike's Peak to prospect for gold. Chapman describes the terrain; the weather; efforts to feed the animals; and the towns he goes through in Illinois, Iowa, and eastern Nebraska, specifically Nebraska C
