This collection consists of the Job Book kept by John E. McGinnis while engaged in carpentry work, 1903-1910. Entries in this book show location of the jobs, type of work, and number of days or hours worked. Also included in the collection are two letters, 1920 and 1923. The 1920 letter from G. W. Shuey of Fairbury, Nebraska relates Shuey family news. The 1923 letter is from a nephew, Charles E. McGinnis. A Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad pass for Mrs. James McGinness is included.

The collection consists mostly of business and political correspondence, 1859-1860, primarily relating to John Cheever. Cheever was a member of the Council of the Territory of Nebraska for the counties of Otoe, Cass, Dodge, Platte and Monroe, and a partner with James Sweet in Cheever, Sweet and Company. The collection includes copies of legislation and other governmental papers from the period as well as general business correspondence relating to Cheever, Sweet and Company. Also included are materials relating to the incorporation of the Nebraska City & Denver Express Company (Nebraska City), and the State Bank of Nebraska (Omaha).

This collection consists of a bound reminiscence, handwritten by Justus L. Cozad in 1908. The reminiscence primarily deals with life in southeastern Nebraska from 1855-1862. He describes what a surveyor does in detail, what areas of Nebraska he surveyed. He mentions the names of the people he worked with as well as the legal descriptions of the surveyed land. He also writes about his time as a farmer in Cass County, Nebraska. He includes an account of a journey to Denver in the winter of 1860-1861. Cozad also makes references to working for various railroad companies in Ohio.

The Riley collection contains large amounts of material related to the history of Nebraska and its people. There are four series: 1) Research Materials; 2) Correspondence, 1973-1975; 3) Vertical File Materials; and 4) Miscellaneous Materials. Series 1, Research Materials, encompasses over half of the entire collection. Included here are mainly transcriptions of newspaper clippings organized by subject. Substantial material can be found specifically relating to Webster County history, Willa Cather, cattle ranching, various forts, the Pawnee tribe, and the genealogy of many pioneering families. Series 2, Correspondence, 1973-75, is a small series of Rileyís letters to and from individuals
