The collection consists primarily of a photocopy of a handwritten booklet entitled, "In Days of Old," by Ella M. (Treaster) Smithson, December 1938. She relates the James Treaster family history and pioneer life in Nebraska, particularly in Fillmore and Saline Counties through the 1870s-1880s. The basis for much of the booklet are the letters written by her mother, Elizabeth Treaster, with elaboration made by Ella - much of which she experienced as a child. Topics include homesteading, farming practices, schools/classroom activities, toys, social activities, and health concerns. Of particular note is the grasshopper infestation of 1874. The photographs show street scenes; businesses; and buildings, such as schools, churches, and homes. There are photographs related to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. Also included are images of bison and elk at Gilbert Elk Park in Friend and photographs of area mills.

His daughter, Annadora Foss Gregory, was a professor of social studies at Chadron State College in Nebraska and wrote her doctoral dissertation on the history of Crete, Nebraska. The Fairmont Creamery at Fairmont, Nebraska, was founded in 1884. It was renamed Fairmont Foods in 1948. This collection relates to the operation of Fairmont Foods Company, its factories, distribution centers, employees, and stockholders. This collection consists of approximately 250 photographic prints showing the Fairmont Creamery and Fairmont Food's buildings and employees, as well as the company's various products. Many photographs show the factory in Omaha, Nebraska, ca.1920s, with milk cans on the dock and delivery trucks waiting to be loaded.
