This collection consists of a 45 page, handwritten reminiscence by Wesley E. Cox. Entitled, "Reflections of Early Days in Saline County," Cox describes aspects of homesteading near Swan City, Nebraska, in the 1860s and 1870s. He mentions other homesteaders, particularly William Remington. He includes information on housing; trapping/hunting; the relationship with Indians; funerals; farming (mention of different farm implements used); education (including the establishment of School District #8 by Reverend W.P. Grantham -- school board, other teachers, physical description of the school); social life (including music, dances and spelling bees); and the 1873 blizzard.

The collection consists primarily of a photocopy of a handwritten booklet entitled, "In Days of Old," by Ella M. (Treaster) Smithson, December 1938. She relates the James Treaster family history and pioneer life in Nebraska, particularly in Fillmore and Saline Counties through the 1870s-1880s. The basis for much of the booklet are the letters written by her mother, Elizabeth Treaster, with elaboration made by Ella - much of which she experienced as a child. Topics include homesteading, farming practices, schools/classroom activities, toys, social activities, and health concerns. Of particular note is the grasshopper infestation of 1874. The collection consists of the reminiscences of Nancy Garton (Mrs. Alf Garton) of Dewitt, Saline County, Nebraska. The reminiscences cover the years 1864-1868 and describe early pioneer experiences in Saline County, Nebraska. They describe grasshopper infestations, hail storms, and floods. The reminiscences also include information about the Cox and Garton families.
