The manuscript portion of this collection consists mostly of the writings of Margaret May Patton Gehrke. It is arranged in six series: 1) Travel journal entries, 1909-1953; 2) Poetry; 3) Prose; 4) Quotation journals; 5) Correspondence, 1964-1965; and 6) Miscellany. The travel journal entries of Series One comprise the bulk of the collection. They were handwritten by Margaret and describe trips around the United States and Canada. The journals are complemented by 15 albums of photographs taken by Edward, which came to the Nebraska State Historical Society as part of the same donation. The collection consists of two copies of "Into Pawnee Buffalo Land" by William H. Hotze, 1957. The manuscript relates primarily to settlement and pioneer life in southwestern Nebraska, focusing on Red Willow County, and particularly Indianola, Nebraska. Hotze's manuscript combines personal reminiscences and research to describe both everyday life and notable events in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The collection consists mostly of correspondence between Manley and Addison E. Sheldon, as well as poetry drafts by Manley. The correspondence dates from 1937-1940 and relates mostly to her attempts to get various stories and poetry published. A folder relating to her time in South Dakota includes an "Economical Survey;" minutes of the Kyle and Porcupine Districts Day Schools Teachers’ organization; a few student drawings and writings; and an issue of the school’s student newsletter. The last two folders contain drafts of poems for <em>La Ko Ta Rodeo and Fair and Other Poems</em>, which was published in 1939.
