The Riley collection contains large amounts of material related to the history of Nebraska and its people. There are four series: 1) Research Materials; 2) Correspondence, 1973-1975; 3) Vertical File Materials; and 4) Miscellaneous Materials. Series 1, Research Materials, encompasses over half of the entire collection. Included here are mainly transcriptions of newspaper clippings organized by subject. Substantial material can be found specifically relating to Webster County history, Willa Cather, cattle ranching, various forts, the Pawnee tribe, and the genealogy of many pioneering families. Series 2, Correspondence, 1973-75, is a small series of Rileyís letters to and from individuals

Webster County were defined by an act approved February 16, 1867. The photographs in this collection show the buildings, main streets, and activities of the citizens in towns located in Webster County. This collection consists of photographic prints and postcards that show many of the small towns in Webster County around the turn of the twentieth century and into the mid-1900s. Many of the photos are of the county seat, Red Cloud. Included are photographs of main streets, commercial and public buildings, houses, citizens, and special events.

In 1935 the Nebraska Light and Power Company in McCook, Nebraska, was destroyed by a flood. This collection contains photographs and a personal account of the flood. This collection consists of ten photographic prints showing the 1935 flood of the Republican River in McCook, Nebraska. There are before, during, and after shots of the flood on the Nebraska Light and Power Company building. Included are photographs of attempts made to rescue men stranded in the building.

The Burden family owned and operated a general store in Red Cloud, Nebraska, from 1896-1952. This collection documents the general store and other property and activities of the Burden family. This collection consists of twenty-nine photographic prints comprised of Burden family photos, as well as images documenting interiors and exteriors of the Burden family general store, 1914; the flash flood on the Republican River, 1935, south of Red Cloud, Nebraska; electronic equipment, ca.1935; and ice cutting near Gothenburg, Nebraska, 1908.

Hitchcock County, Nebraska, was organized in 1873. This collection documents the towns and rural areas of Hitchcock County. This collection consists of photographic prints showing hospitals, houses, stores, and churches, as well as citizens and their activities in Hitchcock County, Nebraska. Included are photos of farm activity in the Trenton, Nebraska, area, ca.1908, 1921, and 1963; the Republican River flood, 1935; and street scenes, 1880.

Dundy County, Nebraska, was created by legislative enactment in 1873. This collection of photographs documents the towns and rural areas of Dundy County. This collection consists of photographic prints relating to the towns and landscapes of Dundy County, Nebraska. Included is a bird's-eye view of Benkelman, Nebraska, 1909, and images of the Republican River flood, 1935.
