Richard Jerome Tanner was a Wild West show target shooter, and later, a physician in Norfolk, Nebraska. This collection relates primarily to people and events on the frontiers of Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and the Dakotas and to Tanner's medical work.
This collection consists of photographic prints and negatives dating from 1865-1945, mostly the 1920s-1930s. Included are photographs of well-known frontier figures, such as William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody, Christopher (Kit) Carson, R.W. (Deadwood Dick) Clarke, and many others. Images of Native Americans and of cowboy activities are included. The collection contains images of period entertainments, such as circuses and Wild West shows, and various travel destinations, such as Mexico and California. Photographs of Tanner and his family are also included.
