Description The ribbon of the medal is red with a yellow stripe going down the center of it. On both sides of the yellow stripe are small white stripes with a black line going down the center. The medal has an eagle porched on a sword and olive branch. Above the eagle is says " Nation Defense." The back of the medal has a square shield with half a wreath underneath of it.

History Joe Sterling joined the Navy in the late 1950s and served for nearly 30 years on active service and in the reserves. He was a crewman on the USS Pueblo when it was captured in January of 1968 and was incarcerated in North Korea until the entire crew was released in December of 1968.
