Title Painting; John Falter; Acrylic; Matted
Object Name Painting
Description Acrylic painting on a transparency overlaying a Currier & Ives print "American Hunting Scenes." The print, a color lithograph on white paper, features two hunters in a canoe paddling along a river. A man at the bow has raised his rifle and is taking aim at a deer moving out of the water and into the tree lined shore. The man at the front of the boat is wearing a brown coat, blue pants, and a brown hat. The man at the back of the boat is paddling and is wearing a red shirt and brown pants. Furs are visible in the canoe. A dog is swimming alongside the canoe. In the background are trees lining the river and distant mountains and a canoe with two passengers are moving along the river. Beneath the print is the manufacturer's name and location as well as the title. Printed below the left and right corners are the artists. The transparency overlies the print. The figures of a mermaid hanging onto the back of the boat holding up a Lark cigarette carton and empty cartons lying on the furs are painted onto the transparency. The print and the transparency are taped to an illustration board, which serves as a mat. On the bottom edge of the mat graphite notes are written: "No Lark carton // replace pulling shirt sleeve."
