People Cody, William Frederick "Buffalo Bill," 1846-1917
History The idea for William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West show originated with the "Old Glory Blowout" he presented in North Platte on July 4, 1882. This simple exhibition of western skill soon expanded into a carefully staged show with trick riding, sharpshooting, gunfights, and Indian exhibitions. Cody's Wild West show toured the United States and Europe for the next thirty years, perpetuating the myth of the American West and spawning many imitators.
