History Herbert Johnson was born in Sutton, Nebraska in 1878. He attended the Elliot school and the Western Normal College in Lincoln. He worked for the Denver Republican (1896), Kansas City Journal (1897-1899), and Philadelphia North American (1906-1912). He was a freelance cartoonist in New York form 1903-1905. He was a staff political cartoonist at the Saturday Evening Post starting in 1912. From 1912 to 1915 he was also art editor of the Post. He retired in 1941, and died December 4, 1946.
