History This shirt belonged to Mary Ann Hertel Smith (1944-2009). Mary Ann was born in Minneapolis but lived most of her youth in Burlington, Iowa. She attended Burlington Community College (now Southeastern Iowa Community College) and the University of Iowa, where she majored in Occupational Therapy.

Mary Ann worked in a variety of professional positions from staff occupational therapist to a trainer of staff professionals who provide care for seniors and other occupying assisted living facilities, to home heath provider. At the time of her death, in 2009, she was a home health occupational therapist for Gentiva Health Services in Lincoln.

Mary Ann married Michael J. Smith in 1970 and the couple had one daughter, Mary Jessica. The Smiths lived in Nashville, TN, Michigan, Iowa, New York and Massachusetts. In 2006, they came to Lincoln when Mike became Director and CEO of the Nebraska State Historical Society.

Mary Ann passed away on July 23, 2009 as a result of Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) a rare blood disorder she battled for 35 years. She is buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa.

This shirt is made by Ann Taylor. The Ann Taylor Loft brand was started in 1996 as a "upper moderate" priced and more casual offshoot of the Ann Taylor brand. As of 2010, three Ann Taylor Loft stores are located in the Omaha metro and clothing can also be purchased through their website.
