History This sword belonged to O.A. Abbott. Othman Ali Abbott enlisted in the Civil War as a private in 1861 and was discharged in 1865 as a first Lt. With the 9th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. Abbott came to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1867 where he practiced law. He served in the Nebraska Senate (1872) and was a member of the 1871 and 1875 constitutional conventions. In 1876 he was elected Lt. Governor. He had four children: Othman A.J., Edith, Grace, and Arthur G.
