"Taking our guns, canteens and a good supply of ammunition we started on our trip. The men carried our packs to the edge of the valley and bad[e] us good bye with tears in their eyes, saying that if we did not return by dark they would hunt us up and give us a decent burial." -Robert Harvey, recalling having to retrace five miles of territory along the eastern edge of Hayes County to set corner posts after having run out of wood, 1869
