Description Color offset lithograph on white paper. Lithograph titled "Gold Mining in California" by N. Currier and J. Ives. Image on the paper is of men digging in the earth with pickaxes, sifting rocks through water, and panning in a stream. The scene is created on rocky ground on the side of a mountain. In the distant background, mountains are visible with wood shacks and trees at the base. In the middle ground are tall pine trees and a wood shack. In the foreground on the right three men with pickaxes are digging a hole into the mountain beside a pile of rocks. On the left are two men are shoveling dirt into a water trough that runs up from the left edge. A man with a pan is kneeling next to the water pouring from the trough, sifting for gold. Beneath the print is black text with the artist names, copyright information, and the title. The print is framed by black lines. Graphite notes are written along the bottom edge by John Falter. Printed on the back of the paper are four paragraphs discussing Currier & Ives prints with featuring the prairie. The four paragraphs are in two columns with the title "The Prairie" printed above and the names of four prints printed below.
