History This deck of cards was acquired by Hollis Dawes Stabler at the 1991 3rd Reconnaissance Reunion. Stabler enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps January 23, 1968 in Wichita, Kansas. He served with the Third Reconnaissance Battalion in Vietnam until 1969. The company left Vietnam November 21, 1969 on the USS Ogden and then went to Okinawa. Stabler received an honorable discharge May 12, 1970. The ace of spades is known as the death card. Special decks of ace of spades Bicycle Cards were sent to Vietnam troops. An ace of spades was sometimes used as a calling card to let the enemy know that the 3rd Recon had been there.
