Description Inaugural Gown, Darlene Brooks, Gov. Ralph G. Brooks. Skirt of dress is made of palmetto green silk chiffon over rayon crepe. Bodice has portrait neckline and drop cap sleeves. The fitted bodice is encrusted with irridescent sequins and sprinkled with rhinestones and tiny pearls.

History Darlene Day Brooks was born in Barneston, Nebraska, in 1907 and graduated from the University of Nebraska. In 1934 she married Ralph G. Brooks, who was elected governor of Nebraska in 1958. Brooks died in office on September 9, 1960. In 1962 Darlene Brooks made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for governor. In 1966 she ran for state treasurer, but was defeated. She died in September 1991.

This is her inaugural gown from 1959. A letter from Darlene Brooks dated 2/16/66 indicates that he purchased the dress at Miller & Paine in Lincoln.
