Object Name Print
Description Color offset lithograph on white paper. Front of paper features a painting by John Falter, "The Commander's Last Dive," depicting a Navy Commander hanging to the side of his submarine as it sinks. The man's hat floats next to him. The man faces forward with his arm raised above his head holding onto the side of the ship. A white number is painted on the side of the ship. Bullet holes are visible in the side. Water is splashing and rushing into the ship. The scene is dark and the water is dark blue with white caps. The painting is framed by a grey border. Printed below the image on the left corner is the black text: "The Commander's Last Dive, painted especially for Esquire by John Falter." On the back of the paper is a red-haired "Varga Girl" in a black negligee, black, stockings, and black high heeled shoes with red flowers on the toe. The woman is lying on her back with her legs crossed in the air. Her arms are extended above her head. She lies diagonal across the paper; her head is in the lower right corner. She is looking toward the lower right. In the lower left corner is a poem by Phil Stack titled "Torches at Midnight." Credit to A. Varga and Phil Stack is made below the poem. "The Varga Girl" is printed in the top left corner.
