Title Painting; John Falter; Oil; Stretched
Object Name Painting
Description Oil painting on canvas, stretched, by John Falter. View of a stone wall with a small square window and larger central opening through which is a view of a distant valley with a river and rising plateau. On the right of the opening is an indistinct brown form, possibly an Indian figure. Some of the wall has been white washed. On the right edge of the painting is a shadow of a ladder. In the rendering of the walls, the artist has applied pigment in heavy daubs which effectively suggest the stone wall's rough surface. The painting is signed on the lower left by the artist. The canvas is stapled to a wood stretcher. On the back of the canvas is an inscription made by the artist.
